If you’re looking for a sustainability-minded hotel near the zocalo, NH Centro Historico is definitely worth considering. The 6-year-old hotel is part of the NH Hoteles group, which – according to a 2011 report -- reduced the carbon footprint of its rooms by 40 percent since 2008 while cutting its energy consumption, water use and its landfill waste and switching about a third of its hotels to 100 percent renewable energy. The 105 rooms in the NH Centro Historico include air conditioning and free WiFi, as well as bathtubs, desks, coffee makers, hair dryers, safes and plenty of electrical outlets. I was surprised that the room I saw had only a tube TV. The hotel also has a small gym, a restaurant (it was serving an antioxidant breakfast when I visited), a business center and meeting rooms. It also offers so-called “eco meetings” with the option to use low-impact, fair-trade materials and carbon offsets.Recommended for:

It may not have a flashy name, but the NH is a surprisingly affordable, modern, convenient choice in the heart of Mexico City. The hotel is among the closest to the zócalo, or main square, as well as the city's cathedral, presidential palace, Templo Mayor and other important landmarks. The rooms are small and about what you'd expect from a midrange chain, but they've got all the necessities: coffee makers, safes, TVs. The NH doesn't charge for wireless internet access -- a nice touch -- and it feels clean and modern. The fifth-floor restaurant, which touts its antioxidant breakfasts, is attractive and inviting. The fifth floor also includes several conference rooms and a well-equipped business center, so the NH is a good choice for business travelers who may not be able to afford the Four Seasons or St. Regis.Recommended for:
