Great place for a family holiday. Be sure to take the boat launch out to the falls. Kids of all ages will love it. Also some interesting history and the contrast between the U.S. and the Canadian sides is noticeable.

Listening to the waterfall with the window open is soothing.

Description

Don't let the village of cheesy souvenir shops and the herds of honeymooners turn you off. There's a reason they're there: the Niagara Falls are one of the natural wonders of the world, and watching four of the Great Lakes spectacularly emptying into the fifth will make you catch your breath, surrounded by jostling tourists or not. From the New York side, get up close to the falls with a walking tour of Cave of the Winds, or on the 30-minute ride on the famous Maid of the Mist; from the Canada side, an elevator takes you to an observation deck with a fish-eye view of the falls. To really splurge - and get great vacation photos - take a helicopter tour. Once you've seen enough of the falls, explore the region around it. Surrounding the falls is a rich agricultural land of orchards, rolling farmland and vineyards. Stay on Grand Island, the largest of the islands on Niagara River, with a good beach, a popular golf course and the roller-coaster-laden Martin's Fantasy Island. Unless you arrive in the midst of one of its famous snow storms, Buffalo makes for a delightful stop, especially for the architecturally inclined: it is home to many Frank Lloyd Wright buildings, as well as lovely ... read more
botanical gardens and a slew of galleries. Naturally, restaurants often offer buffalo wings. There are several bed-and-breakfasts worth staying in, as well as your normal assortment of nice hotels.
