Julia P commented on this trip

Hey Mike, my friend Monique Vanni (check out her Mombasa passport as well) had this to say: " You can either stay out of the centre, in a more beachy thing, or stay downtown. I did downtown, cause I love seedy Mombasa vibes....

Tell them to eat at Island Dishes. It's awesome."

Sorry it's not more specific, but maybe helpful at least for some good grub!

I know that I have recommended this to you before but this place is SO spectacular. If you want a luxury lodge, the suite with the rock-hewn outdoor bathtub is amazing.

It's unlike many of Kenya's other parks but not well known. You'll find dense forest, mineral caves, and thermal pools here. It is where you'll find a cave (a favorite among documentary film makers) ... read more

This might be too far out of your way, it's near the Ugandan border. If you can make it there, the wildlife is not as spectacular as others but the hiking, hot springs, and chance to summit Elgon make it a good destination. This is where we took those giraffe that I helped re-loacate (if you recall my blog from 2007).

I stayed at one of the mobile luxury camps (your own private butler, etc) and not here. I did do the hot air balloon ride and champagne brunch which is SO worth doing, especially at the height of the migration, around July/August.

I think a few days on the coast wouldn't be too crowded. Well, I guess crowded is relative. I'll suggest some spots inland, as well.
