The Hermit Kingdom is fascinating. It may not be the easiest place to get to and the requisite bus tour (for Americans) is annoying if you are a free spirit, but the hassles are more than worth it. One of the most interesting places on Earth.
The Mass Games are an incredible time to visit. When else will you have the opportunity to watch a 100,000 person performance?

I'm not sure if this is still possible, but as of 2001 the USO operated DMZ tours that started in or near Seoul. It was an experience unlike any other. You can't see much of the North, but what you can see says a lot: a massive empty building called the "People's Recreation Hall" (or similar), an empty propaganda town built to entice South Koreans northward, and loudspeakers blaring communist messages south. It only took a couple hours to see an incredible monument to insanity.
