Excellent ski resort just outside Truckee. Very nice Village shops and a lot of diversity in slopes. I love the mountaintop Zephyr Lodge - the views up their are unbelievable. It's almost worth the trip just to grab a beer up there!

Derided as 'Flatstar' by more expert skiers and riders for its relative lack of serious steeps, Northstar is nonetheless an excellent place for intermediate-level snow junkies, with some 60% of their terrain devoted to blues. Perhaps best known for its sprawling terrain parks of boxes, rails, and tabletops, Northstar is a fun mountain and worth considering if you want to stay in North Lake Tahoe.

I'm not a hard-core skier but this is my pick for Tahoe-area ski resorts. After a day on the slopes, the accommodation is great as are the restaurants at the resort.

Northstar is a great mountain for skiers with great variety. The newish Village has lots of great restaurants, including Micuni sushi and the Chocolate Bar. I only give it 4 stars because it is pricey and doesn't offer the views or the values that Diamond Peak Ski Resort has.

Yes, it's "flatstar." But it gets 5 Stars in my book because I've got three kids. The ski-school, day-care, and availability of babysitting are all outstanding (you can drop off your child for a 10 a.m. lesson at 8 a.m.). The kids can also ice-skate, bungee jump, and get a gondola pass and ride the gondola ALL day). And what that means is that I'm able to get out on the mountain and enjoy myself. Expensive? Unquestionably, but they often run 2 for 1 specials on everything when it's not peak season.
So what if they don't have Granite Chief. Granite's closed 1/2 the time anyway (not enough snow, preserving it for the weekend warriors, or avalanche control . . . it's always something). And on a nasty day, when Alpine and Squaw are on wind hold, Northstar is usually up and running.
If it's just me snowboarding, there are better mountains in Tahoe, but if I'm with my family and I want them to be happy, too, Northstar and the Village can't be topped.
