In the downtown area alone there are three basilicas, churches so beautiful that the Vatican gave them special status. The first was Notre-Dame, next to my office. They charged admission to tourists, and saying you’re Catholic doesn’t grant you any exception, except for Sunday morning mass. I felt a little offended in being charged admission. During my first visit, I just wanted to go and pray and promised not to take pictures if that would help me avoid the admission, but was confined to a glass-enclosed side-chapel. The lady there sure was skeptical that I actually wanted to pray there. If there’s any further evidence that Notre-Dame has gone from House of God to tacky tourist spot, every evening there is a “light show” which begins with a badly produced dramatization of the history of Montreal and Notre Dame projected on screens that cover the sanctuary. The $10 admission is only worth it when the shrouds drop and the church is lit up with its many-coloured lights. Just beautiful, but I was sad that this shrine sunk to the level of charging tourists in order to maintain the upkeep of the building.

During a short visit to Montreal couple weeks again, I was given a tour to Montreal Basilica by my friend. Pre-occupied by the gloomy and snowy weather produced on that particular Sunday morning, the building wasn't all that spectacular and astounding looking from outside. However, this average image of exterior quickly turned into a glamorous inside that topped any expectations that I have ever had about a Cathedral. One doesn't need to be a Catholic to fully appreciate the fine details of the breath-taking interior of the structure. Every inch of the ceiling, every pillar, every handrail and every piece of glass are all displays of thorough craftsmanship. The color-coded glasses on both side of the worship hall document the long and exciting history of Montreal, a spot normally omitted by normal audiences. I stayed there with my friend for the entire Sunday worship. Just like any other Catholic Sunday worship, it was holy, quiet, and peaceful. I highly suggest anyone who travels to Montreal to visit the Basilica on Sunday. Not only because its doors opens to people of all faith, religions and cultures, it is also a piece of art, architect spectacle and a peaceful place where you can rest your mind to reflect on the most imperative questions in your life.

It really looks like the original Notre-Dame in Paris! I was impressed.

Description

World-famous Celine Dion can pretty much get married in any chapel that she pleases. That she chose Notre-Dame Basilica, a beautiful cathedral in Old Montreal, speaks to the historic building’s importance. The busloads of tourists agree, as visitors arrive to this attraction to view its beautiful stained glass windows, the Casavant Frères pipe organ and the Gothic Revival architecture. While the ... read more
church’s façade is a work of grandeur, it’s the multi-colored interior that really amazes guests.
