Fun to see. Fun to go up. But if you’re going up, do it at the end of the day. Otherwise you will be overrun with people.

Don't miss going to the top of Notre Dame, eventhough the line was long, it was worth the wait. We got up to the top and the view is amazing! It's the best view of France. It was cloudy, we got up and took some pictures, then the rain came. Good thing it came after I took some amazing shots. Be sure to bring umbrella because you never know when you will be rained on.

Incredibly, this cathedral is celebrating its 850th anniversary. The long line outside moves very quickly, plus entry is free so you have no excuse to skip it!

What can be added to what's already been said, especially since they've cleaned the exterior & glass. The first time I walked into Notre Dame, I looked up and whispered, "Now I understand Bach." We've been to Paris many times, and Notre Dame is always a must stop. Be sure to wander around back to the gardens. And if you know someone with a little clout, try to wrangle a visit to the balcony where the organ sits.

I'm a huge fan of architecture. If you're visiting Paris, you must check out Notre Dame. Admission is free so you can do a quick walk-thru or stay for mass. The style of architecture is known as French Gothic and it took about two centuries to be completed, finally in 1345. The stained glass is stunning and the cathedral has some amazing buttresses. Of course, pictures don't quite do it justice but I was able to capture some really good ones at dusk. It can be seen from the Seine of course and if you take a cruise down the river, there are some great views to be had. We did a night cruise and a bus tour. Inside, photos are allowed but no flash photography. It is after all, a place of worship.

Nôtre Dame is the most beautiful gothic construction in Paris, in my opinion. What makes it more special is that you can take a tour to the very top of the church and see its roofs, bells and gargoiles from real close. There is no elevator, you have to climb up more than 400 worn out steps, but it's definetely worth the view.

Beautiful Gothic Cathedral. The rose window is really a work of art. The relatively recent cleaning of the facade has made the church even more beautiful, as you can see what it must have looked like several hundred years ago

The powerful outlook of Notre Dame de Paris is remarkable. In a bright day, the cathedral is shining bright reflecting the sun. One of the world's best Gothic architecture building, every side is inspiring. Walk around the cathedral to see the structure.

Don't be deterred by the long line that you'll undoubtedly face at the entrance to Notre Dame. It moves quickly and it's worth the wait! Best of all, admission to the church is free (climbing the stairs to the top will cost you a few Euros) but I don't think shelling out the extra dough is worth it unless you are a big fan of gargoyles or sweeping city views. The church itself is magnificent and should be on your must-see list while in Paris.

As a side note: there's a fairly clean and monitored public restroom right outside the church. Since public toilets are hard to find in Paris, I recommend you make a pit stop here if you are in the area.

Beautiful architecture. My favourite part was just sitting in front of the church and absorbing the beauty in front of me. Also of interest was the archeological museum that takes you underneath the church to see the ruins of the ancient settlements on the site.

One of the most popular catholic cathedral's in france. Each first friday of the month you can view and kiss the Crown of Thorns of Jesus and the Nails used for his crucifixion. In my recent visit to this church, I noticed the line outside is really very long since visitors are mostly tourists. They will allow you in without lining up if you will attend Mass.

I stared at the facade of this cathedral in awe. It was packed w/ sculptures, the gargoyle parapet also known as the "Galerie des chimeres" w/c evoke memories of the tormented Quasimodo in the fiction, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", and of course the stained glass windows much of it dating from the 19th and 20th centuries since the originals were destroyed in the ensuing troubles of France's history.

Try to go on a Sunday during mass. The Cathedral itself is beautiful but the mass makes it even more enchanting. The singing, the music and the atmosphere created make it totally worthwhile, even if you are not Catholic.
If you can't make it on a Sunday, visit anyway, as it is one of the most inspiring interiors in any church: the organ, the rose windows, the overall architecture. Unfortunately, I couldn't go up to the observatory, but they say it's an incredible experience as well.

Walking up to this awe inspiring building on a cool fall morning just took my breath away.

    I had to stop...and look...and look.

You must avoid the crowds so you have a more intimate experience with the building - the stained glass windows, the many archs, and just the intricate details that were put into the creation of this building.

Do yourself a favor and take your time, just be respectful of the religious sanctity of the building.

While you may not be able to spy the infamous hunchback, this iconic cathedral is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world, and is in fact the second-most visited tourist attraction in all of Europe. Turn your cellphone off (not just on vibrate!) and allow yourself to melt into the calm historical and spiritual waves lapping over you. Make this one of your very first destinations while in town to really get into the proper headspace to enjoy gay Paris!

Description

Paris's finest church is a great example of Gothic architecture. It sits on the western edge of the Île de la Cité, an island in the middle of the Seine river that was once the center of medieval Paris. Construction on the masterpiece began in the 1160's, and cathedral immediately became a center of the religious world in France (the call to the Third Crusade was announced from within its unfinished walls). The towering church features the largest organ in France and a stained-glass window donated by King Saint Louis. In 1944, the church bells rang here to announce that Paris had been liberated from the Germans.
