How could you not love all these swanky places to go to in SOMA, Novela being one of the additions in the mix!
People are more well-dressed for one thing. Novela just gives off a classy vibe of friendliness.
The drinks are to die for! and especially the cocktails with character with such absolutely cute names!
Drink of choice: Ms Moneypenny
Highly recommended place! Round of applause to the makers of this fine establishment.

I love the look of this place! All the books, cozy seats/sofas; great place to hit up with some friends for happy hour. Note: lots of suits come here since it's close to FiDi!
I came for a Gogobot + Travel Massive event, so I only tried the house white wine, which surprised me (it was good!). Il have to come back for the cocktails some time!

Great bar, pretty people. Thanks Gogobot for introducing me to this new place!
A Novela is a short novel (well, these days it also means a short drama series, popular in Latin America and Asia), and so this new bar opened in the summer of 2013 with a sort of literary theme to it.
It is located on the 600 block of Mission, consequently it is a largely FiDi group of customers, but these days, that could mean a lot of Dot Com geeks and nerds in tennis shoes and Timbuktu shoulder bags, rather than many financial pros in suits and briefcases. What ever happen to the briefcase anyway? Are they only used in Asian TV dramas and the CIA?
The space has got a nice oval shaped design around the main bar in the middle. On either side, there is comfy seating, sort of a reading parlor decor with faux wing-backed chairs to fit the Novela theme, rather than a slick modern lounge motif of most new lounges.
There is also a small back room and bar, for special events and private gatherings, which I was attending, thanks to the great crew at Gogobot! Thanks Connie and Eunice! They had my friends from The Laugh Box there, too, for a little Instagram Hashtag party fun with pics! Good to see some old friends, and meet some new ones thanks to the sponsorship by Travel Massive.
The Literary theme is a little bit off in the drink menu design. Huckleberry Finn Rum drink? Why not Whiskey or Rye? Shouldn't a Rum drink be named Captain Blackbeard or Robinson Crusoe? Maybe even Moby Dick?
I think the Drink Menu designer was watching those Spanish language Novelas on Telemundo, not reading any classic literature.

As one who holds literary characters in high regard, I was skeptical about Novela at first. Why is the "Huckleberry Finn" made with rum instead of whiskey? Why doesn't the "Atticus Finch" taste like an old lawyer?
These are all very profound questions.
After receiving my first drink (the "Jay Gatsby," of course), my fears were put to rest. Excellently prepared by a friendly mixologist, it had wonderful flavor and a unique bite.
Checking further, the beer menu includes several great beers on tap for only $5. I'm wondering if I read the menu wrong, because this is a great price for such a posh place downtown.
While I would never (ever) come to this bar on a peak night, I think it's pretty cool for a chill weeknight out.

This place oozes sexiness and class. Get there before 10pm or else it gets really cramped! The craft cocktails were well made and enjoyable.

Sexy new cocktail lounge that took over the home of the old ultralounge Fluid in SoMa. Love the complete facelift of the space. The decor is very library chic - you'll find uplit novels lining the dark wooden shelves built into the walls. Drinks are cleverly named and nicely crafted. The spot is perfect for groups and celebrations.
