There is no indication from outside that this is a hotel: the name is simply its address: No. 31, Leeson Close, which is signposted in brass on an ivy-covered wall. The main building, a converted carriage house, has a long architectural history which I won’t summarize because the owner, Pat, takes such great pleasure out of telling it on the tour he gives to every guest upon arrival. The hotel is a family-run affair, and the personal attention they provide is exceptional. I was in a very generously-proportioned room in their second building, the townhouse to which the carriage house had originally belonged. Best of all, though, is the made-to-order breakfast they serve in a bright, warm conservatory, which would be worth the room price in itself.

This is a beautiful place to stay – both of the hotel’s two buildings and the outdoor patio area are really nicely presented in a very classy, understated way. If you have an interest in modern design and/or architecture you will definitely enjoy staying here, both for its current presentation and for its history. Number 31 is a boutique-style hotel and the service is truly wonderful – warm, personal and helpful. If you arrive tired and weary you will be saved the usual form-filling hassle of checking in the moment you come through the door and will be offered a comfy (and stylish) seat, some coffee and a chat instead. The breakfast, included in the room price, is fabulous and the cranberry bread is so popular that they’ve posted the recipe on the website so you can make yourself some more when you get home.

UPDATE: Stayed again at Number 31, this time bringing a friend along for the ride. From the moment we walked into the door to the moment we left two days later, my friend was blown away by absolutely everything: the handmade Haestens beds and pillows, gorgeous decorations, the abundant and glorious breakfast and dear, sweet Noel. This is truly a special place like nowhere else. I can't imagine staying anywhere else in Dublin as this almost feels like a second home. Can't wait to go back!!!

ORIGINAL REVIEW: I had booked my last night in Dublin at Number 31 as a splurge for myself. The reviews were good, but its hard to capture how truly wonderful this place is.

From the moment I walked in the door, I was treated as an old friend. A tea tray in front of the fireplace, a little chat with Noel about my holiday so far: everything was so relaxed and welcoming.

My room was in the Georgian townhouse and was absolutely stunning. I tried to pick my jaw off the floor as I was ushered into my separate sitting room and then into the bedroom. The sitting room had a full size couch with designer chair and ottoman, stained-glass window, and golden cornasing. I immediately did a lady-like belly-flop on the gorgeous bed and realized that my original plan to rush out the next morning was now completely altered. I would be sleeping in for sure. Those linens were so soft and luxurious!

I just can't say enough about Noel. He was so helpful and kind, recommended several places that turned out to be lovely. The breakfast was so different than other breakfasts I've had around Europe. Usually very few people take the chance to chat with you or get to know you. Noel facilitates such great conversations and shares such inviting stories that you can't help but be friendly.

The food was amazing: the cheese omelette was perfectly done and the cranberry bread is seriously as good as it gets.

It was one of the few times in my life were I was truly sad to leave a place.
I simply cannot say enough good things about this home away from home. I can't wait to go back!
