Oakland gets a bit of a bum rap compared to their more glamorous neighbor, San Francisco. Although some areas remain a bit more gritty, there's lots of interesting bars and restaurants to entertain locals and travelers alike.Recommended for:Foodies

This review is limited to East Oakland since I haven't explored the other parts as much. I really love the Southeast Asian food in East Oakland. So many mom-and-pop shops and hole-in-the-walls. And I don't think I've ever seen so many taco trucks in my life. So many on International Blvd. In general, there is a lot of cultural diversity in Oakland, which allows there to be a wide variety of food available in the town.

A lot of people will tell you that Oakland is a dump... well it is sort of ghetto if you are rolling through the industrial parts of the neighborhood BUT the gentified north part of Oakland is quite the hipster's get away. I have been craving this specific Ethiopian dish... my friend took me there, amazing. Busy eating, couldn't remember name. Search google, Oakland + Ethiopean.

I love Oakland. It is culturally diverse and is the perfect location to commute back and forth to San Francisco from. Oakland has the famous Lake Merritt Theater, Jack London Square, China Town, Oakland Zoo, Children's Fairyland, and so much more.
Oakland is a great place to visit. It's just unfortunate the public school system in Oakland is failing.

I don't think of Oakland that much, because well there's not a lot of positive to say about it. The high crime rates (whether violent or not) are apparent. It's one of those cities where one street is dangerous while the other is not at night. It does have some unique cultures living there though.
