Despite my hesitation to ever use the word "cute," I have to admit this hotel fits the bill. It's perfectly sandwiched between the beach bum town of OB and the beach itself, meaning you can step right outside and go surfing, swimming, or tanning, or stroll along the eclectic promenade filled with street performers, sidewalk artists, or OB's Friday night market. It's in the midst of hustle and bustle, but the friendly receptionist will whisk you away to the privacy of a casual, cozy little room that reminded me of the beach house where I used to spend summers as a kid. And the courtyard is the piece de resistance - with glass walls that separate you from the noisy crowds on the sidewalk while still allowing you to enjoy the ocean in the evening -- and the fairy lights strung overhead light the place up with charm.

Located on the corner of Newport with great ocean and pier views, this hotel recently remodeled and would be a great place to stay for a San Diego vacation. I like that it’s literally across the street from the beach, of course, and the added benefits of spacious updated rooms, a lovely mossy courtyard, and great access to San Diego attractions make it a hard place to beat for the local experience. I found the ATM right outside the lobby particularly helpful, because I never seem to have cash on me and that’s a big problem in OB. The on-site parking was also a major bonus, since that can be a precious commodity in this area. I don’t tend to use a gym when I travel, and of course the ocean can supply exercise enough, so I didn’t really mind the lack of a gym.

Though the rooms are nothing to write home about, the location of this hotel and the general laid-back ambiance that fits perfectly with OB make me absolutely love this hotel. I could sit on the balcony with the room's windows open for the rest of my life just watching the interesting characters of Ocean Beach go about their day. The receptionist was extremely friendly and I instantly felt at ease here. I could feel my worries getting caught in the light San Diego breeze and drift off into the crowded beaches full with sweaty tourists. Breakfast is not included, but with so many restaurants around I would rather explore the local eateries. Plus one of my favorite coffee shops is across the street, Java Jungle. If you want to relax on the beach all day, and explore a lively night scene at night, this hotel could not be more convenient. Parking, wifi, and complimentary coffee/tea is all included. You could not get more carefree!
