Ohio House Motel
I honestly don’t even know how this place is still around. It seems as if almost every other hotel in River North is trying to compete in some luxury-and-amenities arms race, and Ohio House Motel is just not participating in it. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. If you just want a place where you can drive up, park your car, grab a key, and crash out for the night, then Ohio House has you covered. The rooms are a bit dated, but they’re actually a lot nicer than I imagined they would be when I first spotted the hotel. The bathroom is almost roomy, though this may be the last hotel in the neighborhood that still doesn’t have flatscreen TVs. Overall, this place was surpassed my rock-bottom expectations, though I wish that its sorta-famous coffee shop was still open.

I love the retro feel of this motel. It looks a little out of place on a Chicago street corner, especially in a neighborhood like River North, but I think it's a gem. The rooms are small but clean, and the staff is super friendly. I would definitely recommend this to students and other low-maintenance types (no concierge service here, that's for sure), especially if you're driving into town--free parking really bumps up the value on this budget-friendly spot. The coffee shop is closed, but they offer free breakfast vouchers at a nearby restaurant.

This is a very plain, standard motel in the center of River North. Located right across from the Rock N' Roll McDonalds, you have easy access to some of Chicago's best attractions, as well as a wide assortment of shops, restaurants and bars/clubs.
While they usually have a coffee house on-site that serves breakfast and lunch, it is currently (May 2013) closed for remodeling.
Although they do offer free parking and wifi, I really didn't feel like there was anything special that stood out about this hotel. It wasn't a huge deal that the restaurant was closed because of all the other options in the area, but it definitely didn't help to boost the hotel's value in my mind.
I do have to say that the staff was really friendly, particularly the man at the front desk. I don't want to fully hate on this hotel because there was nothing about it that was truly horrible, but it just wasn't anything special.

Ohio house is a great stay for drivers. I understand that the perpetually under renovation coffee shop attached to the office gives place an air of “closed,” but the rooms are actually very nice, very clean, packed with a fridge and a microwave, Wi-Fi, all the basic amenities. Also the parking is FREE! Adding insult to complimentary parking, Ed Debevic’s is a block and a half away (Ed Debevic’s is the restaurant you go to where the wait staff is rude to you in a fun way...that's why that joke...nevermind). There’s also an Al’s Beef nearby too, if you’re in the mood for that. This really is a great find for roadtrippers passing though and looking to stay for a night, or someone who hates using public transit. And it’s over fifty years old, so there’s the history component. This is a treasure, really.
