There are many Luau experiences to be had on Maui but the Old Lahaina is the one that is most authentic and gives you the best historical information about the development of the hula and its importance to the Hawaiian culture. Highly recommended.

Unfortunately, we were not able to watch the main performance because it started to rain. But the good was delicious and the service was great. Servers and greeters were really friendly.Recommended for:

I'm not the type of traveler who likes touristy dinner shows, but if you're bound and determined to see an artificial luau in Hawaii, then this one is know for being the best at keeping Native Hawaiian traditions alive, from the pre-show games that kids can learn how to play to the singing and chanting later on. Make your reservations as far in advance as possible.Recommended for:

Located right behind the Cannery Mall in Lahaina. This is a popular Luau. It is a traditional luau with Emu pork cooked slowly underground. The food is plentiful and delicious serving traditional Hawaiian favorites (including palms of fern and poi). The have a special buffet for the kids (hot dogs etc.) who are less adventurous with the palette. Open bar for adults.Recommended for:

Before the actual luau starts, there are different spots where people sell some carved Hawaiian sculptors or introduce you to the Hawaiian instruments. Try to get a picture of the sunset while here. You also get to enjoy unlimited cocktail drinks while you're here. The luau starts with the unvieling of the roast pig, which is fun. They let a few tables at once grab some food at the buffet bar, so you don't have to wait in line too long. The food at the buffet is good, but make sure you also save a little room for the desserts that come to your table afterwards. The show itself was pretty impressive, though there was no fire eating.

Hawaiian history seeps from every aspect of historic downtown Lahaina. Spend some time strolling Front Street, the main drag of this seaside area pact with wonderful restaurants, galleries and little shops selling everything from sun hats to Hawaiian gold. Whether perched on the ocean's edge, tucked into an historic inn, located up a side street or down an alley, you're sure to find a special spot amongst the restored wooden buildings here that will charm you beyond belief. Add to this charm the warm tropical breeze off the ocean, pure sunshine and some live acoustic guitar music coming from any one of the many outdoor eateries here, and you've got the magic of Lahaina.Recommended for:

If you are going to do a Luau while you are on Maui, this is definitely the one to do. It is the most authentic, with amazing hula performances. The food is served buffet style and is good, not great. The cocktails (pina-coladas and mai-tais) are served out of a slurpee machine with very cheap booze. But the atmosphere and the performance make it worth your while. Make sure to book ahead.Recommended for:
