- Old Wailuku Inn at UluponoOct 29, 2013
For the local experience, the “Queen of Wailuku Homes” is it. Located in Wailuku, Maui’s hip mini-city, the friendly neighborhood is not found by the beach or in the midst of regular gaudy tourist attractions. Rather, it is part of Hawaiian history in a charming old neighborhood that locals are trying to maintain as an essential landmark. It is also at the base of a most magical sight to behold - Iao valley. The Inn was built in 1924 and restored in 1997 by the innkeepers, Janice and Tom Fairbanks. They provide a fantastic homemade breakfast, a lovely community dining area, a comfortable living room (with a piano!) and true sense of aloha you won’t find anywhere else. I appreciated the host’s graciousness and pride in community. Rooms were decorated with Hawaiian quilts. They also had super deluxe bathrooms. A central location on Maui makes an ideal home base for adventuring.
