surprised at how bad this Oktoberfest turned out last weekend... Especially when it appeared to start out fantastic!
So my friends and I roll up and are thinking its going to be a pain to get in since we didnt make it there till 9:30 or so. But lo and behold... there is NO LINE!!! wow must have been due to it being the last weekend for Oktoberfest (said one of my friends, i dont think so) or halloweenie parties were more popular (my thought). Regardless, we slip right in and there are already a ton of people inside.
Bonus this year... there was a groupon that we missed but found some other similar website with a half off entry fee so it was only $7.50 inlieu of $15.00!
So we are ready to go have some fun after wanting to grab a brat and a beer or three...
Ut oh... problem number one (think Duetsche accent)
over half the side stands are closed that normally dispense beer, brats, and souvenirs... *shakes* his head!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
so I wait in line and grab a draft spaten lager (my favorite beer!) wtf its $10 for not even a pint!!! at least it is still a spaten!
so we are discussing our desire to go wait in the brat line... as it is wrapped halfway around the outdoor area and decide to grub later. we see some other friends and go over to chill with them. we are now on our second or third beers and realizing that good german beer acts quickly on an empty stomache. ohhh well we are having fun teasing the beer wenchs and just enjoying the general environment... Ziggy Zaggy Ziggy Zaggy... OI OI OI!!!
Its nice to be able to celebrate ones heritage now and then in a positive manner :)
ut ohhh problem number two!!!
One of my friends waited in line to get grub and they were out of a few items on the menu and an unfathomable item to boot... they were out of catsup SERIOUSLY??? HOW DO YOU RUN OUT OF CATSUP WHEN YOU ARE ANTICIPATING AT LEAST A THOUSAND PEOPLE??? LET ALONE WHEN YOU ARE PRIMARILY SELLING BRATWURST TO AMERICANS (if this was Germany i could understand since they almost always use mustard, but this is the USA and we LOVE our catsup). AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...
problem number three even more shocking...
even at a price of $10/ glass of beer (remember not quite a pint) they have to close one beer stand down since they ran out of kegs or didnt want to move them O_O
Wait Oktoberfest isnt that the beer swilling bratwurst grubbing and more beer swilling German holiday of world renown??? THEN HOW DO YOU RUN OUT OF ENOUGH BEER TO EVEN KEEP 3 BEER STANDS ROLLING?
wow... simply shocked and amazed.
My last trip here for Oktoberfest was simply amazing and beyond compare, the fun was never ending. This year it was like trying to jumpstart a dead car battery with a 9volt out of the garagedoor remote control...
None the elss we had a bunch of fun, becuase we always do, regardless of any other factor, but the amazing wow factor etc was completely missing this year...
problem number four... from the moment that we arrived, there was a group trying to get us to leave go across the street and pay 20$ for a hotel party that no one was going to that didnt include anything but the cover charge... talk about annoying.
but we were saved when we left... we went to Tacqueria Mexico... and well you can see what happened next...

Old World Village definitely comes to life when Oktoberfest is happening.
There's a little of everything. There's art galleries, boutique shops, specialty shops, festival hall, Old World Restaurant and Hotel Europa.
You want a taste of Germany, this is the place to go.

Tucked away behind the formerly-known-as-Huntington-Center is the Old World Village. It's a small German-themed shopping center with many quaint little shops. Many people might know it for it's annual Oktoberfest celebration, but I remember it for local punk shows in the mid-nineties.
