A little oasis in Assi Ghat - not the most 'authentic' of Benares experiences but it only took a few days in Varanasi for any quest for authenticity to be whipped out of me. If you need a break from a very chaotic city you will very much enjoy Open Hand - it was full of expat students and NGO workers when we went. It's actually a chain that you can also find in Ladakh, Kochi, Manali, and even doing catering in Delhi. It's western food (mostly pastries) and coffee at a higher standard than the backpacker average.
Attached to the cafe is a carefully curated little shop. The beautiful silk scarves that Varanasi is famous for are a little pricier here but you can trust the quality of the textiles more than at your standard street stall. They also had angora to die for.
