Staying in Orangewalk Town was the easiest way to see Lamani and a much nice place to stay than Belize City, which is a little crowded and didn't leave me feeling particularly safe. We landed and left Belize City immediately. Our main goal was Lamanai, but we found several fun restaurants including breakfast from a little trailer down the street from our hotel, tamales from the back of trucks, and Elizabeth's Chinese. : ) Not every restaurant is recognizable from the street, so a guide or helpful hotel personnel are needed.

I only spent an afternoon in this little town in Northern Belize, but it left quite an impression on me. Our very slow moving public bus stopped here on the way down from Mexico to Belize City. We hung out in the little square downtown and it was very charming, and the locals were very kind. I look forward to coming back here some day.

Major town in the centre of Belize. Good staging point for trips into the interior.

Description

The second largest city in Belize, Orange Walk sits at the left bank of the New River. Belize City is just 53 miles south. Orange Walk, also dubbed “Sugar City,” is known for its sugar production, a major industry for the city. Nearby ruins and the city’s lazy river make it a city worth walking through.
