Being interested in Cold War and DDR history like I am (I suffer at times from 'Ostalgie'), this was a fascinating stay for me. The people at Ostel have done their best to decorate in the old 1970's DDR style. It's a bit kitschy, but exactly what I was expecting/hoping for. I loved it. It's also in a great location for the growing night scene in the area - including Berghain.

The GDR hostel is tucked away deep in East Berlin, but just minutes walk from the famous Berghain club, and with easy access to the other clubs at Warschauer strasse, and other nearby sites like the East Side Gallery as well as the Ostbanhof transit hub. But the hostel's big selling point is the fact that it is built and designed completely in the style of the former GDR. If you are interested in experiencing Germany under communism, then book a bed at this hostel, and you will get an understanding of the style of life in the days before the fall. However, if you aren't a history buff, then there are definitely other hostels that would make your stay more enjoyable, and are better located to see and experience all that Berlin has to offer.

Being a Cold War history junkie, I was fascinated by the Ostel, and its realistic sparsely decorated interior, horrendously ugly wallpaper, brown-hued light beaming throughout the hallways, and unsmiling but direct front desk service. The only anachronisms were the fast and free wi-fi, and ample offerings of the breakfast buffet for 7.50 Euro. There's also a patio, filled with sun, beer-drinkers and volley ball players in the warmer months. The rooms are generally spacious, even if equipped with upwards of six beds, and the space is quiet, with guests seeming to take the party outside. Appropriately situated near the Ostbahnhof, it's situated in a gritty but happening corner of Berlin, within walking distance to the famous Berghain.

I was happy to see that this hostel lives up to its reputation after reading about it in the media before booking. The wall-to-wall, head-to-toe themed decor of old East Germany proved fun and interesting (although I'm not sure if the glum faces and bluntness of the staff was supposed to be part of the illusion). Lack of chirpiness aside, Ostel was well worth it's modest price. I stayed in a basic shared dorm (up to 6 per room), which was comfortable and came with towels and linen free of charge.
As it was summer I was lucky enough to enjoy a barbecue in their garden. Other than that it was pretty much a no-thrills hostel that does the job well. The uniqueness of the GDR interior was interesting and I heard from a Berliner that to enhance the experience, Ostel occasionally have trained actors interrogate guests, Stasi style. Would love to hear if anyone ever got the treatment.

A hostel in a world of its own and trapped in late last century. Located in the east part of Berlin its a unique place to stay in. I think it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I really enjoyed this place for its flair, the location and the friendly service. For the price I paid the hostel fulfilled my expectations. If you are looking for a posh accommodation with luxurious interior design, you are in the wrong place. In some cases you will have to share the showers, live without a hair drier, or walk up the stairs instead of taking the elevator. But that’s all part of the experience in this GDR style hotel, and its worth giving it a try if you're on a budget.
Completely designed and themed like a former GDR establishment, Ostel is located in the heart of the former East Berlin. Ostbahnhof is a short walk away and offers quick access by metro to Alexanderplatz and the Fernsehturm (TV Tower). Additional...read more from www.ostel.eu
