A gorgeously sprawling stretch of sandbars and islands along the Atlantic Coast, the Outer Banks is my favorite place to hang out and escape in North Carolina. Whether you want to go surfing, chow down on seafood, visit historical sites like Kitty Hawk or do some fantastic birding and hiking, you'll easily find enough to fill a whole week here.

This is one of the most beautiful spots on the entire East Coast. Ocracoke Island is a little out of the way, but worth the extra ferry ride. It's the epitome of Southern beach relaxation, with a welcome side of upscale foodie.

Perfect summer getaway. We prefer the north end toward Duck and Corolla. We tried the 4wd section, but found that even though it was less populated, you had to keep an eye out for the cars driving down the beach, especially with children, No Thanks!
The water is much warmer here, and there are often dolphins swimming just offshore.
