The first time I walked into Outerlands I felt totally at home. They offer just the sort of food I’d cook up myself for friends coming in after a walk on foggy Ocean Beach, or a hike through nearby Golden Gate Park. Mmm. Leek soup. Home baked whole grain bread, good cheese, melted on slabs of ripe tomato. Hot fresh ground coffee. Can I move in? Can I come here to eat always? Organic eggs, home made yogurt, pickled red onions, pastrami, pan fried local fresh sardines. They don’t take reservations, but during a recent visit I added my name to a list on a clipboard hanging outside. They now have heat lamps for those sitting outside, and they’re serving cocktails.
During my visit, service was attentive, though my friend’s coffee took awhile. But that was because it was ground on the spot. We were there midweek. Waits are longer on weekends. Loaves of their whole grain bread are for sale. Darn. I should have taken one home. Recycled wood interior. Free street parking.

The menu at Outerlands is not extensive at all but EVERYTHING is either market fresh or oven fresh. The sandwiches are wonderful because the breads are homemade. The hot spiced cider with bourbon completes the meal.

Small, cozy place out by Ocean Beach. Outerlands specializes in seasonal fair and its menu changes regularly. It also has excellent wine choices as well as unique, tasty beer selections. Lunch tends to be less crowded than dinner where you will almost always have to wait a bit for a table.
