We did a snorkel trip with Pacific Whale Foundation out to Molokini Crater. The cruise was pretty good - they had a great photographer to take underwater shots. But my sense is the snorkeling was much better closer to shore.

We do not have first-hand knowledge, but interesting Pacific Whale Foundation activities turn up frequently on Event's Lists for Maui. They offer snorkeling and diving tours, whale watching, hikes, beach cleanup events for visitors, nighttime tide pool explorations for kids, and festivals. Our impression is these educational activities are well-attended and well-received. We urge our guests to check out Pacific Whale Foundation's website to learn what might be going on during their stay.

If you are on Maui in the winter, a whale watch tour through Pacific Whale Foundation is a must! Even if it's not the season, it's a great place to learn about whales. PWF does a great job guiding, educating, and bringing awareness of whale and ocean marine life to the public. The staff are friendly and very knowledgeable. A hi-light of my Maui trip is doing the sunrise whale tour and I got to see over 7 whales, 2 of which swam super close and under the boat twice!!! I saw breaching, 3 jumps!!! I wish my camera was quicker in snapping the pictures. It was soo awesome and crazy seeing it in close view.

If you're going to go on a winter whale-watching boat trip on Maui, put the Pacific Whale Foundation, a nonprofit organization, at the top of your list. Tours include an on-board naturalist who'll talk about the habits of the migratory north Pacific humpback whales that give birth and nurse their young in the shallow, warm waters just off Maui's leeward shores. Most tours depart from Maalaea Bay, south of Lahaina and north of Kihei.
