Pahalgam itself is a little like an 1800's gold rush town -- corrugated roofs and streets selling provisions and high, high mountains rising all around. If you visit for Amarnath Yatra, it's a boomtown, full of mad crowds and tent encampments with tens of thousands of people, and hotel prices soar. Out of yatra season, it's a great spot to base yourself for walks in the surrounding mountains, which are truly gorgeous country.Recommended for:

Extremely beautiful area. The town is a bit busier, but as you start to leave you can see amazing rivers and gorgeous green scenery. The trees are fantastic area. I am jealous as my good friend has property here. I wish I could live here forever.
There are two parks near. The drive up the hills may require some experience as you drive close to some ledges.
