Located near Piazza di Vittorio, the Palazzo del Freddo is one of Rome's best gelaterie and is often overlooked by tourists in favor of Giolitti or San Crispino. All the locals know it well, however.Recommended for:

This place considers itself the oldest Gelato factory in Rome - it is one of the best. A huge place with more than a fair amount of gelato for the price with a wide selection of flavors. Can get busy with locals and tourists but worth the wait.Recommended for:

Fassi, near Piazza Vittorio, is a cavernous Roman gelato institution. Their yogurt flavor is particularly nice, with a perfect tangy sweet mix. A lesser known stop on the Roman gelateria trail, and definitely not a touristy one.Recommended for:

Palazzo del Freddo di Giovanni Fassi (or just Fassi, as everyone I know seems to call it), calls itself Rome's oldest gelateria. Of all the gelato places I've visited, it certainly has the oldest feel. It resembles a giant cafeteria, a square with loads of people lined up to place an order. Not the most fun. Even Giolitti in the Centro Storico with its hoards of tourists still manages to conjure charm.
But the gelato is good, thankfully. And while I didn't have a place to sit and enjoy it, it was well worth the visit.
Riso is good here.Recommended for:
