Presidential palace, formerly the temporal home of the papacy when the pope still ruled the papal states. Definitely the case that the presidential court in Italian has all the trappings of monarchy. Grand and yet somehow understated.

The palazzo in front of the Presidential Palace offers some good view from the height of the Quirinale hill. There are also goings on related to the President but what the marching and other things were, I could not figure out.

One of many beautiful squares in the city, the Piazza del Quirinale is located near the palace of the same name, home to the president of Italy. The Piazza del Quirinale and the Palazzo del Quirinale sit atop Quirinale Hill, the highest of the seven hills of Rome.

If you're tired of the tourists around the Trevi Fountain, head a few blocks away to the Palazzo del Quirinale and the piazza near it. The wide open space with a view is a relief from the crowds, and the palazzo is simply beautiful. Admire the guards as they go about their business in spiffy uniforms.

On Sunday mornings during the season you can have a tour of the palace and a concert at noon.

Description

Built in 1574 on the highest and most desirable of Rome's seven hills as a papal palace, the Palazzo del Quirinale continues to house Italy's leaders. In addition to housing the President of the Republic of Italy, the residence serves as the nation's official reception hall, where visitors marvel at the Scalone d'Onore (grand staircase hall) and enjoy art collections including not only paintings, ... read more
but statuary and Murano glass chandeliers as well. Naturally the highest hill of Rome offers unparalleled views of Rome, which can be viewed from the elaborate palace garden.
