The Pan Pacific is situated in Vancouver’s Canada Place complex, the hub for cruise ships, tour buses and conventions. The building, which was designed to look like a cruise ship, is grand but feels a little impersonal since it’s primary purpose is to hold conventions. The decor in the lobby and dining areas reminded me of an airport—comfortable but nondescript and a little cold. The hotel rooms, however, are fresh and cozy, and have wonderful views of the waterfront and Gastown. But if you’re looking for something intimate or boutique, then this is probably not the place. It’s a large luxury hotel that caters to the masses.
A huge benefit to staying here is the location. You're literally steps away from both convention centres and the cruise ship docks; walk two blocks east and you’re in Gastown; one block west and you’re on the seawall, which will take you to Stanley Park; just up the street is the business district and shopping centre; and across the street is the Canada Line, which connects to the airport. There's no need for taxis!
My favourite part about this hotel is the outdoor pool and hot tub which overlook the harbour. I was there on a rainy day, so it was pretty quiet (albeit peaceful), but I can just imagine how great it would be on a sunny day to be sun-tanning while watching the ships dock.

When I travel to Vancouver this is the only place I stay. The water-view rooms' large windows give you a stunning view of the harbor and if it isn't too rainy or cloudy, the beautiful hills across the way. Somehow watching the floating planes buzzing in and out or stopping at the Chevron station floating in the middle of the water just doesn't get old.
The service here is excellent. The staff are friendly, courteous professionals who really work to anticipate your needs. Need a restaurant recommendation, tickets to the biggest show in town that night, car, limo, you name it, the staff will find a way to make it happen. Not that you can't just start walking and find it yourself. The hotel's prime location means you can walk to the Gas Lamp District to check out the bars and restaurants or head towards Stanley Park to check out the zoo or just enjoy a view of Vancouver.
Every room I've stayed in has been generously sized, very clean, stocked with plenty of soft linens, and offering top shelf toiletries. The on-site dining options are pricy, as you'd expect, but they're worth it. The hotel bar has a nice selection. If you're a gin drinker, any gin cocktail on the menu will be delicious. I've tried several and have yet to be disappointed.
About the only complaint I have with the Pan Pacific is the lack of complimentary wifi. Seems a bit stingy.

The Pan Pacific shares its lobby with the Canada Place convention centre and entering the building from the front feels grand but light and airy. It's a pretty cool feeling entering a hotel.
In the spirit of the connected cruise ship terminals, the Pan Pacific was built with a nautical theme. If it weren't for similarly-themed adjacent buildings, the hotel might look a little out of place but it actually looks pretty good and with huge windows throughout, the inside feels very modern.
Probably a benefit of being connected to the cruise ship terminal and convention centre, there are a few perks: underground access to the SkyTrain and Seabus terminals within the building connect the hotel to the rest of the city and region; a waterfront location gives the north-facing rooms a beautiful view across the water; and a cruise-wear, jewelery, and souvenir mini-shopping street is located inside the hotel, beside the check-in desks.
If I had to pick one disappointing feature about the Pan Pacific, I'd probably say that the pool space doesn't seem to be decorated to feel as comfortable as the rest of the hotel but honestly, an outdoor pool that overlooks Coal Harbour and the north shore mountains is pretty tough to complain about.
