Parador San Miguel is a Colonial-style hotel with a plant-filled courtyard, stained glass, paintings and sculptures in the corridors and caged birds on every floor. An attached restaurant offers meals throughout most of the day, and the spacious room I saw included high ceilings, a window, embroidered pillows, wire-frame beds, air conditioning, a desk, two chairs and a small coffee table, a wall-mounted flat-screen TV with cable, a closet with a safe and a tiled bathroom with a hair dryer. The hotel is one of Oaxaca’s seven Tesoros hotels, meaning that the government has designated it an exceptional hotel – meeting a range of service and facilities criteria – in a historical area. Parador San Miguel uses various Mexican art and crafts in its rooms, including woven curtains and bedspreads, wrought iron, woven reed and leather furniture and hammered metal decorations.

Oaxacans love their birds and their angels, and Parador San Miguel has them both in spades. Birds in cages are everywhere, and their songs are mesmerizing as you walk around the hotel's outdoor corridors, which surround a central atrium. As for the angels, well, take two cherubs (they'll be on your bedroom wall) and call me in the morning. As long as you're not deathly afraid of angels or birds, you'll find Parador San Miguel exceedingly pleasant. The three-story hotel is well-located, an easy walk from Oaxaca's zócalo, cathedral and Santo Domingo church. The building is attractive, with wrought-iron railings, stained-glass windows, a very nice terrace with tables and tasteful landscaping. The rooms also have eye-catching artwork and embroidered pillowcases, and the wall-mounted, flat-screen TVs and small desks are nice touches. All rooms have wifi and safes, but breakfast in the first-floor restaurant is not included.
