Tourists often bypass landlocked Paraguay in their eagerness to jump between the cuisine of Buenos Aires to the beaches of Ipanema, or from the colorful vertigo of La Paz to the functional fun of Santiago. But there is plenty to see in this country, and what's better, you'll see it without being crushed by crowds of tourists. Paraguay spent three centuries under the Spanish thumb, and then crumbled during the tragic War of Triple Alliance of the 1860s, in which the forces of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay killed two-thirds of the adult males in Paraguay. In some ways, the country has never fully recovered. It is rich in natural resources, home to the world's second largest hydroelectric dam, and exports prodigious amounts of soya beans and beef – but much of its population still languishes in poverty, and its government is reputedly one of the most corrupt in the Americas. Despite these bare realities, the country warmly welcomes visitors. Any trip to the country should include time in the beautiful capital Asuncion.
