Just like beignets in New Orleans or churros in Spain, the custard filled pastries at Pastéis De Belém are culinary icons of Lisbon. They are so delicious that you want to have more (and wouldn’t mind standing in line). You can eat them inside with a cup of coffee or you can get them “to go”.

The creamy goodness of the egg custard tarts in a flaky pastry shell...accompanied by hot chocolate...mmm. It's quite a wait to get a table, and people will hover if they sense you're finishing up (and then pounce the moment you pick up your purse), but it's so yummy here that people put up with it. You can hop down the street from Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and satiate your sweet tooth.

Super crowded, but worth the wait. Pasteis de Belem is famous for their Portuguese egg custard tarts (pastel de nata) - and for good reason. Their egg tarts are the best in Lisbon - sweet but not too sweet, with a pastry crust that's just a little bit savory to counterbalance the sweetness of the tart. Their other foods, however, are not recommended. Eat lunch elsewhere and just come for the tarts. Note that there is a separate line for eat-in and take away, and the take away line is usually longer.

Pasteis de Belem is the home of Lisbon's famous custard pastries. If you want to get these goodies to go, you have to wait in quite a sizable line. Fortunately, that's what I have a boyfriend for. The pastries are absolutely delicious. You'd be missing out of if you skip this one.
