Do not believe people who say they have found the best bakery in Venice and it's name is not Tonolo's. They are wrong.
I could wax lyrical about the light and heavenly cream puffs, the rich chocolate rum cake or the chantilly cream filled pastries. But probably the highest recommendation for Tonolo's (besides the fact that you have to claw your way to the bar through the sea of locals) was that the lady who we rented our apartment from saw the wrapper from our leftover cake and went, "You know Tonolo? How do you know Tonolo?", wary that mere tourists had stumbled upon something so precious as her favorite bakery. When locals start becoming protective of a bakery...you know it's good.Recommended for:

Sweets and cakes are really something crazy in this venetian pstry. Creams are really delicate and tasteful. I suggest to try chocolate bigne and cream krapfen. Wow. If you try it once you wouldn' t resist.

I agree with Rachel. Any cafe which has a line up of old Venetian grandmas every morning is a good sign of quality sweets. Their cream filled pastries are delicious but if you have a salt tooth, then go for the mini pizzas which are fresh out the oven!
