I was not a huge fan of the Peace and Love hostel esthetically, and it's quite out of the way.
However, it does its job as a hostel, is clean and cheap, and doubles as a bar (in fact, the lobby is basically just a bar with a small section to check in). This makes the hostel a good place to meet fellow travelers as well as locals. Another advantage is that it is located right off the Saint-Martin canal, which is one of the most beautiful and underrated places in the city. And right below the hostel, on the canal, is the very trendy music venue, Le Point Ephémère.

This hostel is definitely different! It looks like a bar that one day just decided to also offer accommodation. There is no reception desk, just a lounge style room with neon blue lighting and a metallic bar that serves drinks until 2am.

Private double rooms are available as well as dormitory style rooms of 3, 4 or 14 people. Like many hostels, prices are cheap (costing you about 30 Euros or less per person/night!) and they also have happy hour specials on all their drinks!
No breakfast is provided, but there is a kitchen downstairs that reminds me of one you’d see hidden in the back of a tiny restaurant. Unfortunately it lacks counter space and has no seating area. Basically this is a place for young people to party (the Canal St. Martin with its bars and nightclubs is just a few steps away), drink and make new friends.

This place looks a bit funny at first, as it looks like a bar on the street level. The location is a bit off the beaten path, but you can walk down to the Canal St. Martin and the metro Jaurès is just nearby. It's not far from Gare du Nord, and the area can feel a bit unsafe during the night.

There are different kinds of room types: you can get a dormitory with 4 or 14 beds or a private double room. All the rooms have shower and sink, but not all have private toilets. There are common toilets on each floor though.

This is definitely a place for young, outgoing people, who are looking to meet new people, and are, most importantly, on budget. It's a cheap hostel, nothing more. I'd say that there are even better hostel around the area.

My girlfriend and I stayed here for two nights in the spring of 2010. Overall it was a good experience, but I would probably look elsewhere for lodging options next time. It seems to be a good option for those on a budget and for singles.

At risk of sounding lazy, our room was at the very top of the building and we had to climb a significant amount of steep stairs in a cramped staircase to reach it. It was only a big deal trying to lug up our backpacks and on days we had been on our feet for hours. A minor annoyance, but notable.

The bar at street level is basic and is a decent place to hang out at night. The neighborhood is ok and feels relatively safe. You certainly do not feel like you're in the heart of things, as far as attractions or nightlife. There is a bit of walking to get to the major Metro routes, but it is not bad. Across the street from the hostel there is a great local restaurant where locals hang out, but I don't remember the name (across the street from McDonalds). In that same area not far from the restaurant is a canal with a beautiful setting at night.

So much fun!! when I was backpack through Europe, this was my favorite hostel! Great bar in the ground floor with amazing people. Met new people everyday and explored the city and partied with them all night! Highly recommended!

This place is awesome for solo travelers. They pack you in (3 high bunks) but the bar is outstanding and the people there beyond willing to help you out. Just make sure you have the correct arrival time, because they will give up your reservation.
