This is an amazing property. I can't imagine staying anywhere else in the city. This is one of the best Peninsulas on the planet.
I fell in love with the Peninsula Shanghai from the moment I entered. The location on the Bund is perfect and the property does a great job of balancing the Art Deco traditions of the city with Chinese design aesthetics.
Many Peninsulas feel like copies of the Hong Kong Pen (e.g., NY, LA, Chicago). This one has it's own style. It is respectful of the Peninsula brand but incorporates local design in a fusion of art deco and modern styles.
Best things about the property:
- design / aesthetics
- location on the Bund
- exceptional rooms (large, plush, great bathrooms)
- high tech amenities (free international calls, free internet, and numerous means of multimedia connectivity)
- friendly staff
- small but nice fitness facilities
- spa and pool
The only things about the property that I would work on are:
- service in the lobby restaurant (need to be more proactive / predictive). It isn't enough to take the order, deliver, and disappear
- need to ditch the Davi amenities and go back to Molton Brown... please!!!!!
- mediocre scones served at high tea
A few recommendations if you plan to visit:
- print out a map to the hotel in Chinese. Otherwise, you may end up at the Peninsula International Hotel
- visit the bar on the top floor. The views and atmosphere are excellent
- ignore the fact that the location is a little less convenient to businesses in the city. This place is special

Grand hotel near the park, the Pen Shanghai is on the quieter end of the bustling Bund. In its own greenery surrounding, the Pen is an awesome refuge from the vibrant Shanghai lifestyle. The service is impeccable and the ambiance of class, Pen Shanghai is a shining representative of the famous Pen hospitality.

Every opulent inch of the Peninsula hotel oozes luxury—in case you missed the Rolls Royce parked out front or the Chanel boutique on your way in. The hotel caters to the most affluent of Asian and Western travelers, offering dining options to please any palate and a roof top bar with unrivaled views of the Bund. The interior décor of the hotel’s Western-style restaurant, Sir Elly’s, is suave and sexy with black candelabras and large round tables, while the Chinese restaurant stays true to its Asian roots with expensive-looking antiques lining the walls. The hotel’s afternoon tea, served in the aptly named Lobby is not to be missed and includes a number of petit scones, sweet desserts and savory finger sandwiches.

Stunning, beautifully restored building right on the Bund. Effortlessly classy hotel with staff that is so helpful and polite you’d never guess you’re in China. There is a good sized high end shopping arcade in the hotel that only adds to the glamour of the Peninsula. Afternoon tea is offered in the main lobby with vaulted ceilings and muted colors which is a nice contrast to the extremes out on the streets of Shanghai. If you’re looking for something a bit more exciting in the evening be sure to pop into the Salon de Ming for a classic 1920’s cocktail and have someone explain the decorations, it’s stunning. They have live music starting at 9pm most evenings. The rooms are very comfortable with automatic blackout curtains, perfect for beating jetlag. Lots of nice little touches in the room including books on the history of the Bund and very nice toiletries, great lotions and shampoo.

The Peninsula Shanghai is the epitome of Asian luxury. This 14-story hotel is the tallest one on the history Bund and even has a helipad! Unfortunately its not in service, but we can dream, right? If you need to pick up a few gifts, there are 28 luxury stores in the Peninsula Arcade with brands like Shanghai Tang, Chanel and Piaget. The Cantonese restaurant on the second floor is a mini vacation itself. Designed as if it were a Shanghainese apartment, diners sit among armoires, room dividers and other artifacts that give the impression that you are guests in a local 1930’s home. The private rooms are all styled after the living rooms and bedrooms of this fictional family- some of them even have beds! - and no two are the same. Dinner and drinks at Sir Elly’s is a must! The view of the river is exceptional, and again, the décor is stunning. If you’re not a fan of heights, you can head to the basement for a drink and live music at the mysterious Salon de Ning. Quite possibly the most bizarre, unique and beautiful space in Shanghai, this bar boasts 4 open private rooms each with their own theme. The staff is exceptionally courteous, with everyone wishing you a good afternoon and bidding you farewell, you feel like a valued guest even if you’ve only been there for a minute. Reception is painless and the staff speak flawless English, which is always a welcome comfort in China.
Dining options at The Peninsula Shanghai include 2 restaurants. Room service is available 24 hours a day. Recreational amenities include an indoor pool and a fitness facility. There is a full service health spa on site. This Shanghai property has event space consisting of banquet facilities, conference/meeting rooms, and a ballroom. The property offers an airport shuttle (surcharge). Additional property amenities include a concierge desk.
There are 235 guestrooms at The Peninsula Shanghai. Coffee/tea makers and minibars are offered. Bathrooms feature separate bathtubs and showers, bathrobes, slippers, and complimentary toiletries. In addition to complimentary wireless and wired high speed Internet access, guestrooms offer multi line phones, iPod docking stations, and CD players. Televisions have DVD players. Rooms also include desks and clock radios.
Additional fees and deposits may be charged by the property at time of service, check in, or check out.
