Pension Norma is the most basic and dated hostel I have visited in Europe. The price is ok, but in Barcelona you can find better. If destiny brings you hear then you can expect a clean but not so comfortable bed, a private bathroom if you choose one otherwise shared and a whole lot of stairs. Having said that, the location is very good. Located in Gracia, you have the charming plazas of the district within a 5 minute walk (my favourites being Plaza Virreina for a relaxed coffee, or Placa del Sol for a raucous beer) and shopping on the most upmarket boulevard in Barcelona, Paseo de Gracia 5 minutes away in the other direction. You have several of the city's popular sights within a 15mnute walk, but for those further afield you are well-placed for transport links too.Recommended for:

Right in the heart of the Gracia district, this hostel is airy, clean, and bright. The attendants are friendly and helpful, and the balcony outside many rooms is the perfect place to pick up free wireless. The only downsides? When I stayed there, we had to leave our key at the front desk every time we left the building, a hassle we eventually got used to. And it's about seven thousand flights of stairs up from the ground floor, which is fine unless you have anything heavier than 5 pounds to lug up to your room. Great value for the money.Recommended for:

I didn’t really like this place. As far as budget accommodations in Barcelona go, there’s nothing wrong with it, it’s just not my style. The location, right above Passeig de Grácia, on Gran de Grácia, is convenient for exploring the center of the city by day and going out in Grácia by night. Plaça de Sol is an easy jaunt from the guest house. That said, the narrow stairs up to the place with heavy bags or after a late night out, are no fun. Rooms are clean and I’d definitely recommending paying a bit extra for a private bath, although there’s an extra toilet off of the balcony if you decide to share and have urgent need of the facilities. There’s no kitchen to speak of and the price is acceptable, but not an amazing deal, all things considered.Recommended for:
