In Peru, air is constantly on your mind. You can sail down the Amazon river where 20% of the world's oxygen is produced; have your breath taken away at awe-inspiring Lake Titicaca, the highest lake in the world; test your lung capacity hiking the Incan Trail on your way to the great ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu; or breathe in the romantic atmosphere of high-altitude colonial Cuzco. Once the seat of the Incan Empire, today Peru is a vibrant South American country with breathtaking eco-tourism as well as a rich cultural and historic tradition. The gigantic Nasca lines and figures etched into the desert sand in southern Peru are an enigma to this day but are fascinating to see via plane or helicopter. The capital of Lima offers a wide variety of entertainment and activities, from vibrant nightlife options to well-preserved Incan ruins. Peruvian food is world-renowned for its variety and unique taste; tomatoes, potatoes and peanuts originated in Peru. Restaurants in Lima, dubbed the 'gastronomical capital of South America,' serves Peruvian delicacies like ceviche, lomo saltado (sautéed beef) and anticuchos (beef heart kebabs).
