Peter the great built the Peter and Paul Fortress in 1703, as a way to defend his new city from a Swedish attack. Peter essentially built the city around the Peter and Paul Fortress. It is here where all the Romanov Tsars are buried including Peter and Catherine the Great.Recommended for:

The Peter and Paul Fortress is the original citadel of St. Petersburg, Russia, founded by Peter the Great. This is the place where history runs amok. I loved it. Here is where all the tzars are buried. This is the place where Tzar Paul had his father dug up and buried his parents together, just to get back at Catherine the Great. The history is so rich that you cannot miss this one. The view from the fort is great too.Recommended for:
