Peter the great built the Peter and Paul Fortress in 1703, as a way to defend his new city from a Swedish attack. Peter essentially built the city around the Peter and Paul Fortress. It is here where all the Romanov Tsars are buried including Peter and Catherine the Great.

The last resting place of many of the Romanoffs. I was there shortly after one had them had been reinterred there, and there was an interesting exhibition about this.

The Peter and Paul Fortress is the original citadel of St. Petersburg, Russia, founded by Peter the Great. Today it is the burial ground of the Russian Imperial family, the site of groundbreaking scientific experiments, and a forbidding jail that held some of Russia's most prominent political prisoners.

This is the place where history runs amok. I loved it. Here is where all the tzars are buried. This is the place where Tzar Paul had his father dug up and buried his parents together, just to get back at Catherine the Great. The history is so rich that you cannot miss this one. The view from the fort is great too.

Красивое и интересное место, но вот поход по стене крепости своих денег явно не стоит

Description

As Russia is known for it's tough weather and will to persevere, St. Petersburg's Petropavlovskaia Krepost' is quite a symbol of the city and country's character. Built by Peter the Great to protect against a feared Swedish counterattack during the Northern War, this citadel encapsulates Russian architecture and culture with the Peter and Paul cathedral reaching into the sky. Having served as a prison for political prisoners, the fortress is also the burial site for such czars as Peter I and Alexander III. With centuries of history encased in its walls, Petropavlovskaia Krepost' is one of St. Petersburg's most noted sites.
