I liked it for the atmosphere and mood only. If you don't care about how the food tastes and love great cocktails, you may enjoy Philippe by Philippe Chow. The cocktails are what they do best. I dined there with friends from New York who say the food tastes great in NYC. The food looks good (at least in the dim lighting), but it's tasteless, as if the kitchen lacks even salt and pepper. Stop in for a drink at the bar and have dinner elsewhere. The chicken satay was praised on Yelp, so we tried it, but instead of peanut sauce, Philippe Chow uses a bland, buttery cream sauce. It was very disappointing. If only the drinks had been stronger, we might not have noticed the food lacked seasoning.

Philippe by Philippe Chow has returned to Miami Beach. The restaurant has found a new home in the tony South of Fifth neighborhood, and the 6,000-square-foot location dazzles not only with its food: A retractable roof adds to the drama of the space. The intimate wine room can hold up to 35 guests, and the U-shape bar offers cocktails like the Black Dragon, Midnight Mojito and Espresso Martini. If you are in the mood for some of the restaurant’s pork soup dumplings in the comfort of your home, you can also opt for take-out or delivery. Lunch will begin service on December 12. 36–40 Ocean Dr., 305-674-0250
