I was so excited to finally eat at Phil's but it just didn't live up to the expectations. The portions are great but the flavor just didn't do it for me. Perhaps a return visit is warranted, I feel like the odd man out...

my stomach went into phils bbq with 2 pepto bismol pills and was completely disagreeing with me until i stuffed down a baby back rib and my upset stomach became completely agreeable.
i've never sing high praises for bbq ribs because i'm not a big fan of ribs but phils is life changing. the ribs are juicy, tender, and succulent. and the bbq sauce drenching the ribs had me fantasizing about piggies swimming in bbq sauce.
deliciously and generously affordable. phil, i think you are the new love of my life!

Phil's BBQ usually has ridiculously long line, but it moves faster than you think! The bbq here is really good! Portions are great, the sauce is great and tangy, and the staff are friendly. I recommend the pork and beef ribs! :)

Not exactly five star quality ribs. Or maybe this place has been hyped up too much. On a recent trip to San Diego, Erin L, Matt P, Jenni H, Robert H, and I decided to try out Phil's BBQ. We tried to get there around 5pm to beat the dinnertime crowd. However we failed miserable.
I blame this on Matt P and his poor navigational/planning skills.
Anyway, we arrived to Phil's a little after 6pm. The line was ridiculous. It wrapped around two walls of the restaurant. Instead, we decided to order to go.
We had a rack of rib, half a chicken, coleslaw, and baked beans. The ribs were good. They weren't too sweet. And there were no hard or chewy pieces. I liked their chicken because it was very moist. The side dishes were pretty average. And you don't really get a lot when you order a large or small size.
I would not wait in line to eat here. The dining area inside is dark. And it's a cafeteria style setting. This is more of a takeout kind of place. Takeout service is quick. And you still get all the good food that Phil's BBQ has to offer.
You can also sit at the bar and order from there. You avoid the lines. And, you get to drink alcohol with your BBQ. :)

Amazingly good BBQ for being in San Diego, of all places! There's always a huge line out the door. Get the pork ribs! The onion rings are amazing, too. Make sure to bring some dry rub home to cook at home! If you don't want to wait two or three hours in line, just get your order from the togo line. You'll get out of there in 20 minutes or so. Just eat it at your car. Or come prepared and bring a couple of fold-able chairs. It beats waiting two or more hours in line and hungry!

Phil's BBQ is pretty much the go-to BBQ for San Diego. They are always packed, but they have a system that works for getting people in in a timely manner. Many people don't know that Phil's in Point Loma also has an event center in the same parking lot. They have 2 great private rooms for small or large parties, and their minimums are low- check it out for your next event!

HOT DAMN!!!!!! This is great BBQ!!!
Ever since I moved to the area I've been dying to try Phil's. But their perpetual line that wraps around the building has always deterred me!
But when the sis and her fam came in for a visit, they suggested we order some Phil's for pick up---per their friends' suggestions. And it was DEE BEST idea ever!
We called in our order and were back at home within 20 minutes with bags full of bbq. Although I didn't go inside to pick up the food, the sis said it was extremely efficient---and she's a freaking tough cookie to please!
I wasn't that hungry so I ordered the pull pork sammy without any sides. It was GINORMOUS! Easily the size of my head with tons of succulent and flavorful pork piling out of the bun! My sis also ordered the same sammy so we decided to just split one and have the other as leftovers. Between the both of us, one sammy was plenty!!! My only suggestion would be to order more bbq sauce because I prefer my pulled pork sammys to be smothered in sauce.
We also had the baby back ribs and bbq chicken that were both a hit. Ribs were tender and chicken was super juicy!
Prices are extremely reasonable----especially considering the serving size!
This is a MUST try! And if you're not down for standing in lines than do what we did and take out! :)
