I did not have many expectations about this city, maybe this is why i enjoyed so much. Few tourists, a calm small city, with great sino-portuguese architecture everywhere. Some nice bars and caffes.

You have to go to the Market and see all the stalls. If you find anything you like, make you bargain. Whatever price they say, make sure you pay 20-25% of that, less even better. Also there's a lot of food to offer, I had some fried banana and boy was it good and it was cheap. I believe I paid $0.75CDN. Seafood is also excellent tasting, you could also bargain for that. The shrimps we had we're huge. So make sure you try that.

This was the one of the top asia's best resort places and still is in my opinion. From Phuket you also need to visit near by Phi Phi islands where I think you'll see the world's best beaches and resorts.

I was in Phuket for a month, taking a TEFL course and had a great time exploring the dozens of beaches, great nightlife, and natural beauty of Phuket. Being the largest island in Thailand it doesn't really have an island feel to me, more like a beach side province, but it is laid back and if you go during low season prices are very reasonable and beaches are empty.

Phuket is a nice serene change of pace from Bangkok. The beauty of the coast is 2nd to none.
We were there a month before the tsunami and haven't been back since. I'm not sure what is and what isn't there, but it still a place to see and experience.
