The Piazza del Duomo is an architecture lover's dream. With the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore and Giotto's Campanile towering over a piazza seemingly packed with Renaissance sites, you'll find yourself slowly taking in each unique building.
It's an exhibition of extravagance over subtlety, but it's beautiful nonetheless.

While you have to see it, (truly it is a must-see), the crowds and people hawking various junk, and rip-off restaurants surrounding the Duomo can make the piazza off putting. Like so much of Florence, going early in the morning or in the evening can help, but unlike other Italian cities, going during 'siesta' time doesn't limit the crowds. We went mid-week early morning and evening and it was particularly spectacular at night in the rain, we had the piazza to ourselves looking at the Duomo all lit up. Spectacular!

This is one of those places like the Eiffel Tower ot Empire State Building that, while touristy, you have to check out if you are in Florence. Aside from being touristy, it actually is quite beautiful and is the heart and center of Florence, which is a beautiful walking city.
