You will get a breathtaking view of the whole city of Florence in this square. The copy of David's statue is also found here.

This is the spot. Bring your camera at dawn or sunset to make a try for that quintessential shot of the Duomo and city of Florence. It's a nice little walk south and then up the hill from the Pitti Palace area. Once time I was up there and there was a VW bug rally. Another time some sort of traffic police event. It's Italy, so you never know just what you'll see.

For an amazing sight view of Florence and its famous Duomo, you gotto take a bus ride to the Piazzale Michelangelo at sunset and feel the Tuscanian life from above...

The Piazzale Michelangelo is on a hill across the river from the town center, so it has great views of all the interesting stuff, including the Pitti Palace. There are a few small restaurants up there too.
