    Canada's immigration museum. I visited in 1999, and according to wikipedia that was the year the museum opened. Two years earlier I had been to Ellis Island, and there are similarities but Pier 21 is still worth the visit.

700 donated books, and over 300 films weave the stories in stunning detail. Pier 21 boasts a museum gift shop, cafe and 5,000 square foot gallery of images for visitors to absorb. The Pier's Scotiabank Research Center also allows you gain archival information on any arriving immigrant from 1865 until 1935. Additionally, as the departure point for the 496,000 Canadian Troops in World War II, Pier 21 includes substantial information of the veterans' experience among its many archives and displays.
