Playa Azul is a nice hotel with a good pool and a great little beach that’s kinda off the beaten track. The reason it even made it on my radar is it’s beach club, which is popular with expats; it’s located on the northwestern side of the island so doesn’t see the cruise ship traffic as much as its counterparts in the southwest do. Instead, you’ll find mostly locals/expats at the beach and domestic travelers staying at the hotel. Which makes for a nice change of pace, where drinking isn’t the main focus and Techno doesn’t dominate. The rooms are a bit dated but very comfortable with the basic amenities you'd expect; all have ocean views too. Since it’s located outside of town, you might consider renting a car or using cabs to explore downtown San Miguel or the island a bit. All in all, this is a solid choice.

Playa Azul is one of Cozumel’s old stand-bys, with friendly service, reliably comfortable rooms and one of the few hotels with a natural beach. Playa Azul is technically a “golf resort,” meaning guests don’t have to pay green fees at the nearby course. The hotel beach also operates as a beach club, open to the public, and you’ll get the occasional busload of cruise ship passengers or daytrippers from the mainland. But it certainly doesn’t have the hustle and bustle of the larger beach clubs south of town, and the hotel is a good choice for families. Rooms are okay – nothing fancy, nothing awful. The hotel is well north of town, so you’ll probably want a car. Then again, a car is handy no matter where you stay, as there’s so much to see and do around the island.Recommended for:Family Travelers
