The Plaza Hotel Lucchesi is neither new nor old, neither fancy nor not fancy. It really holds a tone that is right in the middle. The lobby is a sprawling series of groups of couches, which eventually turns a corner and becomes a bar. I really appreciated that there were a couple of computers available for use in the lobby, each in their own little cabinet -- so I could actually use Skype to call home. I stayed in a "superiore" class room that had a killer view of the Arno. One element that really added to my experience was that there is a school nearby and in the afternoon I would open the window and the voices of the children squealing in Italian was like a scene from my fantasy of an Italian vacation.
Barbara at the front desk was very helpful. If anything goes wrong, ask for her!Recommended for:

This upscale hotel is classic European luxury. Everything is notably lavish, including the stellar views from the room. (For some reason, the green glass in the lobby reminded me of the Great Gatsby, which I found charmingly decadent.) One major draw is how attentive the staff is to its guests. There’s a laundry service, room service til midnight (room service at all is so unusual in Europe, in my travels), and the ability to borrow a laptop, cellphone, or fax machine. Let me say that again: YOU CAN BORROW A COMPUTER OR CELL PHONE. All in all, there’s nothing singular about the style, philosophy, or amenities of this hotel. It’s just a really, REALLY nice place to stay.Recommended for:

Extremely fancy hotel with full service. There is really an extreme feeling of elegance here, and it is right on the river. Part of the central area and and very convenient to the heart of Florence. I personally felt a little overwhelmed by the extravagance, and also a bit generic in comparison with other extremely fancy hotels. It was very "classically" beautiful with nice views from certain rooms (darling view of river or churches from where we saw), but nothing REALLY stood out about this place. Very tall ceilings and beautiful curtains add to the general feeling of elegance. In the conference room, the mix of built-in architecture and intentionally contemporary art left me with a feeling of superiority. I think in general it's a fine place to stay if you want something between a chain hotel and a place with local charm, but if your looking for originality or a genuine flavor of Florence, I might go elsewhere.
