This is bread made the old fashioned way - it smells and tastes great. They gave us a sample, so be polite and ask. Get some bread and then some cheese and a little wine - voila, lunch!

In my opinion, this is the best bakery in Paris and possibly the best bakery in the world. The croissant and brioche are perfection and the bread Poilane is famous for is pretty exceptional as well. The bread is baked in a giant stone oven in the basement of the shop and I once had the incredible opportunity to go down and watch the masterful baker at work--(it was about 6 am and I was up with jet-lag) and it's an experience I'll never forget. The scent of fresh-baked everything, wafting out the door, makes it impossible for me to walk by Poilane without stopping in and buying something delicious. I also love the cookies at Poilane-- they are not too sweet an just delicious.

Right next door to Poilane bakery is la cuisine de bar, a little wine and sandwich bar. They use the same bread- which is the best bread in the world. Anyone trying to truly make great bread emulates Poilane bakery. They slice the big rye breads, so you have these large 7lb pieces, toasted really well, top it with poached chicken and anchovies or goose rillettes, or what ever they have that day. Slice it up and serve it with a little salad and a great glass of wine. It’s a perfect for lunch.

World-famous bakery. Founded in 1932, now headed by 3rd generation Apollonia Poilane. Great breads and other baked goods can be found here.

(by the way, if you watch the Giada de Laurentis cooking shows, this is the bakery she keeps raving about)
