Take time for a windy walk out to this beautifully restored lighthouse, just south of Fort Bragg. Despite having been in operation for over a century, budget shortfalls have meant that this California state park may soon close its gates to the public. And that's a real shame.

History is found here where the U.S. Coast Guards decommissioned in 1963 and then the locals decided to fix the lighthouse up so well that it was recommissioned by the U.S. Coast Guards and is open to visitors see the lighthouse and small museum with articles from the shipwreck of the S. S. Frolic. Fun for the whole family!

The Point Cabrillo lighthouse is a tiny structure without much to do, but it's a nice spot for a picnic if you like to sit and look at the ocean.

The fully restored lighthouse is open every day and is on a spectacular point jutting into the Pacific Ocean. During gray whale migration you can see the spouts and the whales as they travel to and from their feeding and breeding grounds. Lighthouse keepers homes have been restored as vacation rentals, and every March the Light Station hosts a two-weekend Whale Festival with whale watching, exhibits, and children's activities. I love to walk the trails and smell the sea and look for wildflowers. A truly spectacular California place.
