Wonderful museum, that includes 18th. century to contemporary. Free every Friday night from 5-9. many of the Maine artists you've always heard about:
    Homer, Wyeth, Marin, Hartley, etc.

For a small art museum, this place does pretty well. Their best pieces are a handful of works from the 1800s and early 1900s. Overall it's something fun to do while I'm Portland, but I would not plan a trip to Portland solely for the museum.

In a tasteful modern building wit clearstory lights, this small museum is right in the middle of Portland's downtown, Longfellow Square. (named after their favorite-son, the 19th Century poet) An excellent rotation of works by the classic Maine artists, like the Wyeths, Winslow Homer and Rockwell Kent. Among the 5 galleries, there is always one with something very avant-garde works. And well placed, odd-shaped windows, give serene views of gothic New England and busy harbor. The gift shop and cafe are also very nice and there is a pay-parking lot just past the museum.

I really enjoyed going here. I took my sketchbook and did as the art students do. I emulated the paintings on the walls and made drawings of the sculptures! They are very nice indeed.

Terrific medium sized museum might be the best of Maine's many museums.
