The beaches in Rio are each demarcated by different lifeguard posts, each of which attracts different tribus (tribes or groups). The spot between posts 8 and 9, near Rua Farme de Amoedo has long been the gay domain on the beach (indeed the spot is called Farme Gay). Here you'll find tanned, buff, sun lovers sporting form-fitting sungas (boxer-type speedos). Look for the rainbow flag flying over the sands, and you'll know you've arrived. In recent years, the gay scene is slowly spreading west (to Postos 9 and 10), so have a wander down the beach before deciding where to base yourself for the day.Recommended for:

Posto 9 is the main beach post for Ipanema Beach. The beach is a bit more upscale and chic, and has more of a local feel. When it's sunny and on the weekends, Posto 9 is filled with cariocas playing sports and lounging getting a tan.Recommended for:
