Pounamau is the Maori word for greenstone or jade as it's commonly known. These apartments on the main road into Queenstown may fancy themselves a rare gem - but to me they look like a series of spice racks. Stacked up like paper dolls holding hands these identical apartments form a line stretching down the street. Inside all the gentle poking of fun is over - beautiful hardwood floor and massive windows overlooking the lake and mountains really up the wow factor. As full apartments they really do feel like home - if you're in town for a while and fancy cooking and 'living' for a while these are a great option. It's a short stroll into town and there is plenty of parking if you have wheels. Little touches like every room having an actual computer in the room, gas fireplace and stylish modern minimalist design makes Pounamau feel like the precious stone they call themselves after.

Pounamu (poo-nam-oo) is the Maori word for jade, the natives’ stone of choice for building their tools and weapons. But there is nothing hand built about these apartments which are clean, modern and fresh – and with their blonde wooden floors you feel like you’re in Scandinavia. The clean lined apartments are well fitted out with plenty of mod cons – there’s even a desk top computer and printer in every room! There’s a variety of room sizes available, many of which can be cleverly combined to make a larger place. Plenty of parking is available and the apartments are an easy ten minute walk from central Queenstown - far enough “around the corner” from town to capture views of the magnificent Remarkables mountains in their floor to ceiling frontage windows. Be sure to detour through the beautiful Queenstown Botanic Gardens on your way to or from town – they’re quite sublime. In short, I was a big fan!
