A complex of Hindu and Buddhist structures (and quasi-Hindu/Buddhist structures – there’s a certain degree of religious indissociation in the history of central Java), these temples 17km east of Jogjakarta are easily visited as a daytrip, and are a certain highlight of any visit to Java. The towering collection of 8th-century Hindu temples nearest the gates is the primary attraction here, but equally rewarding is the splendid Buddhist Sewu temple at the far north end of the park grounds, which, curiously, few visitors devote much time to. In the morning, you may just have the Sewu temple to yourself – it’s the perfect place to sit alone and contemplate Indonesia’s long and varied cultural history. Trans-Yogya bus #1A runs here from Jalan Malioboro.

The Prambanan Temple Complex is a complex of Hindu temples located in the Yogyakarta Special Region. It consists of 300+ temples in which some are in ruins due to hundreds of years of age and proximity to the Mt. Merapi (an active volcano). Legend has it that the temple complex was a request from a lady requesting to a lover that a 1,000 temples should be made for her-- yet she foiled the plan one temple short of completion, and the man cursed her to be the 1,000th. Yet the real number are much less than 1,000. The three largest temples are dedicated to the 3 highest Hindu gods: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.

Who does not know Borobudur? This Buddhist temple has 1460 relief panels and 504 Buddha effigies in its complex. Millions of people are eager to visit this building as one of the World Wonder Heritages. It is not surprising since architecturally and functionally, as the place for Buddhists to say their prayer, Borobudur is attractive.
Borobudur was built by King Samaratungga, one of the kings of Old Mataram Kingdom, the descendant of Sailendra dynasty. Based on Kayumwungan inscription, an Indonesian named Hudaya Kandahjaya revealed that Borobudur was a place for praying that was completed to be built on 26 May 824, almost one hundred years from the time the construction was begun. The name of Borobudur, as some people say, means a mountain having terraces (budhara), while other says that Borobudur means monastery on the high place. (makasih om Yogyes)

It is relatively small compared to Borobudur but it is worth going. Unlike Borobudur temple, which is a Buddhist temple, Prambanan is a Hindu temple. Check out the Ramayana Ballet performed in the evening at the temple too.
