My ex-fiance worked at an elementary school in Ma'adi (an uncharacteristically green suburb in Cairo) called Saqqara so we had to go to the Step Pyramid of Saqqara for that reason alone but once we were there, I felt like I had stepped onto the set of 'Star Gate.' The crowds in Giza are nowhere to be found so the place lends itself to the quiet contemplation of what's most salient on this arid plain - the pyramids themselves.

Interesting to see some of the not so famous pyramids. It shows you how they progressed in their building evolution. It is alot less crowded and if you were unable to go inside the Giza pyramids the Red pyramid is easily accessable.

This is the site with the Step pyramid and the oldest complete stone building complex in the world. The Step pyramid has a rectangular base so it is very different from the ones in Giza. It was a hot sunny day when we visited so make sure you take precautions for the sun and the heat.

The great thing about this location is that it is quite far away from the other sights. We weren't bothered half as much here as anywhere else, so we had the chance to look around and take some pictures. We did get coerced in a tour by one of the builders doing renovations on the pyramid.
There is a nice spot where you can see the leaning pyramid in the distance and it's very spacious there so you have the feeling you are in the middle of the desert.
