Generally, I am skeptical of any hotel that has the word "quality" in its name, but I was pleasantly and surprisingly impressed by this one in Otay Mesa. Given its proximity to the Mexican border, it's not hard to figure out that the hotel is a popular stopping point for travelers to and from the country. With a hearty Mexican-inspired breakfast, though, I wasn't complaining. I also loved the surplus of pillows on the beds, as well as the free newspaper every morning. And of course: free WiFi. Best of all, though, was the added bonus of duty-free shopping just around the corner.

I had a little bit of difficulty finding the entrance to this hotel, as the building’s proximity to the border means that there are semi-trucks crowding any and every part of the street that is not a driveway. Once I swooped up to the hotel, though, the front desk helped me find anything I needed. The manager was very excited to tell me about how clean the hotel was, and he wasn’t kidding- I’ve never seen a shiner bathtub drain in my life. Every once in a while there was a slightly dingy typical hotel smell, but my room was just fine. It was also a rather large room with the added bonus of a gigantic Whirlpool tub. The couch pull-out bed made sleeping for a total of 6 people which seemed pretty great to me. There’s even a small gym on the property, and you can find calories to burn in the well-stocked breakfast room in the mornings.Recommended for:Family Travelers

If you want to be able to jump into Mexico from the balcony of your hotel then the Quality Suites in Otay Mesa is the perfect launching point. You can walk to the border from the hotel, so this is a great location if you are stopping for the night on your way into Mexico. You can even walk across the border for a bite to eat in Tijuana and head back at night if you want to. The rooms are pretty big, and include a hair dryer, a microwave and mini fridge, coffee maker, and an iron. The parking is free and this is one of those rare and wondrous hotels that offer free HOT breakfast (scrambled eggs and such), so I might consider staying there just for that! The outside is pretty dingy looking, and the hotel is surrounded by nothing but concrete. But then again if you are in Otay Mesa I don't think you are really looking for a tropical paradise and moonlit walks on the beach. There is a little shopping area down the street with intriguing Mexican restaurants (that close to the real deal they better have good burritos), so there are a few dining options near by. Overall this hotel is very convenient if you are stopping for a night on the way to Mexico.
